Whirlpool AFG 7080 Freezer - Relay noises

The temperature seems to overshoot and then it sounds like a relay is oscillating at between 1sec and 1/2 sec . Then it can settle down again and control the temp. The freezer has been defrosted to ensure the sensor is clear. Is it a control board fault & is it repairable, or likely to be uneconomic?

Whirlpool AFG 7080 Freezer - Relay noises

I had the same problem last year and changed the miniature relay - £3.50 from Maplin. That cleared the problem for 18 months until a couple of weeks ago when the clicking started again. So I changed the relay once more but this time it hasn't cleared the problem. So looking at £146 for new control board from Whirlpool.

New whirlpool refrig. freezer ok at 0 but refrig

The freezer get the first crack at cooling and combination units have a fan and adjustable vents to steal some of the cooling capacity for the refrigerator. The vent are normally located in the back of the refrigerator compartment and with these, you can balance the cooling capacity between freezer and fridge. I recommend you swap your thermometer back and forth until you get the balance you want; typically the freezer should be at 5 degrees F or below and the fridge at 35-40 degrees F. Adjusting the control for temperature and having the vents set to supply the cold air you want in each compartment should give you the range you want in each.

This noise is the fan motor going bad because a bearing is worn out. You need to replace the fan motor before the compressor goes out.

Freezer compressor not able to start and noisy.

I agree with Brian on the above answer about it being locked up. Take an amp reading within the few seconds the compressor is trying to start. If it is high (15 amps and up) the compressor could be bad. One option prior to compressor replacement would be a 3 in 1 hard start relay. This has the overload, relay and capacitor built in. It ramps up power sometimes more than what it is existing. If this does not work then the compressor needs replacement and you would need a qualified service technician to replace it.
