Suggested Questions And Answer :

I have an upright, not sure what model, about 10 years old, temp alarm suddenly began sounding, but thermometer shows temp at 29 F and no evidence of food or ice thawing. When I turn alrm off, red light remains lit, and alrm comes on again 30-60 minutes later. If I turn freezer off and back on, alarm and light go off, but come back onafter either minutes or hours. Is there a way to rest alarm or disable it?

If it's the freezer that's 29 degrees, that's too warm. It should be close to 10 or 0. I would suspect a defrost problem. If it's an automatic defrost The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle. If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer. If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm. You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced. The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle. If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others. You can post your model number into one of several appliance parts sites on the internet and search for defrost components to find your parts.

Ok we have a kenmore upright freezer Model # 253.26062103. We got it brand new about 3-4 years ago. It was working fine til about 2 weeks ago when the ice cream became soft and high temp alarm started going off..everything else stayed frozen. my husband checked and there was frost build up on the back wall which we decided to take evrything out of the freezer and self defrost it because we thought since the outside temp was unusually high maybe the freezer wasnt able to defrost properly. We did this and plugged it back in a few days later. We put a thermometer inside the freezer and it is only reading 20 degrees F or -5 celcius. Still not cold enough. We then replaced the electronic control panel which also houses the defrost timer and that did not help raise the temp. Alarm still going off when switched is turned on. We then decided to have a repair service out...they said it was the defrost heater, timer and thermostat, we said we already replaced the timer, so we bought the other 2 parts and replaced them. well it is still not cooling properly and we have no idea what to check next...This is costing us a ridiculous amount of money and we can't get a solution...Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the sensor, a $15 part. it pretty much controls everything related to defrosting.

Proper temp. range in freezer

Hi dgh1, The freezer should stay within 5 degrees of 0 while in operation. While in defrost the freezer may reach as high as 20 to 25 degrees. If any higher temperatures are reached your food will spoil as they are defrosted and refroze everyday. If you find that the temperature is allowing your food to defrost you may want to replace your defrost thermostat. This device is located on top of the evaperator coil inside the back of the freezer. It is made to turn the heater off when a temperature of 55 degrees is reached. One other possible problem could be your defrost timer is taking to long to restart the cooling cycle after defrosting. I hope this will help you and please send any other questions you may have, I am happy to help. and dont forget to rate me. Mike Anderson Anderson Appliance (865)945-3808
