If compressor is running, then you are correct in saying no point in replacing stat. by sounds of it you have a faulty compressor fault or a syatem fault - impossible to dignose by remotely. this is not a diy job i'm afraid

Freezer not getting cold enough

I think your system has a leak and has lost the refrigerant charge. The only way to check is by accessing the sealed system. Most systems are covered for five years on the compressor. Contact the place of purchase and give them your indications for your problem.

I have an upright freezer that is almost three years old. About 6 months ago the door did not get shut all the way and alot of I've and frost developed. We unplugged it an defrosted it and cleaned it up(most everything had to thrown away). When we started it up(plugged it in) the freezer would not get cold. We tried leaving it unplugged hoping i it might reset(that did not work) and we tried leaving it plugged in but it still will not get cold. It does get power- all the lights work. What do I need to do.

Hi, this is unusual for this to happen on a unit and one that is only 3 years old? There is no reset on it to push, but if the lights are on, you do have 120 volts going through the system. With just the door being ajar, this unit should have started right back up when you were ready. What it sounds like to me that has happened, is the thermostat cold control has stuck in the off position and the unit is not calling for cooling like it should be. This control that is located in the main box and is what turns the compressor, condenser fan motor, and evaporator freezer motor on when the system calls for cooling. Find this control knob and rotate it one way and the other slowly when it is very quiet to see if you can hear it click. I don't know how it is set up in increments, 0 to 10 maybe, and it depends on some models which way you turn it for it to start. Some have a arrow showing the colder and coldest settings. Try this to see if you do hear a click. If nothing starts, rotate it back and forth to see if you may be able to break the contact loose. Just listen for any motor, compressor from under and behind to start or try and start as the control may have a loose connection. If you have any electrical experience, you could pull the control out and check for voltage in and if there was you could turn the knob to colder and test to see if you then had voltage out to everything. Or with a jumper you could jump across the contacts from line to load side to see if it started and you would know that it was faulty. If no voltage out to the load side(motors) the control would be open and faulty. For now, plug it in and start with this cold control/ thermostat. It will have a long aluminum probe on it that is mounted in the box that senses the temperatures to start and stop this unit. If that probe got broken when you were cleaning inside, it is gas filled and that would be the problem for sure. Even a small crack. But if not, try and do what I have said and if it does not start, unplug it and try to take the control stat and pull it out just enough to see the wire connections to see if one is loose or has come off. I really don't believe you have lost a compressor or motor. You could have lost the defrost control or defrost stat which would be difficult to walk you through to check them. I just believe the problem is in the main thermostat. Try these things and keep me posted so we can get to the bottom of your problem. Talk with you soon, and best of luck, Sincerely,Shastalaker7

Fridge freezer not chilling!

Sounds like there is a leak somewhere in your system. One way you can check yourself is to run your fingers over every solder joint you can find and if you feel any oil at a joint or if I think you said there are coils in the freezr check them too and if you find oil you found a leak. There also could be a small pin hole in one of the coils and you may not find any oil. Most times its a bad joint and it will be wet. other then that either call a repair man or as you said convert it to a tool box. Good luck

Upright self def. freezer not getting cold

Is your compressor running? Try this: place your hand on top the compressor, quickly-in case it's hot-it should be vibrating and cool/warm to the touch. If it's not running then the cheapest/fastest test is to try a 3in1 start kit from a local appliance shop. The 3 in 1 start should be around $14 to $20 to wire up. It's extremely simple to wire up, just ask the clerk at the appliance shop's parts counter and they will explain it. I hope this helps you out!!! :)
