Ice build up in my frost free upright freezer

I have a Kenmore upright frost free freezer. It is approx. 5 years old. The door seems to seal Ok, and I don't have any problem freezing the food, however, on the bottom of the unit, ice builds up in the middle underneath the basket. We've cleaned it our several times, and it continues to build up ice in that one spot only. The basket actually gets stuck to the ice it is so thick. We've checked to make sure nothing was leaking to cause water build up. The door seems to still seal fine. It only appears in this one section.

Ice build up in my frost free upright freezer

I looked at the BACK at the bottom underneath of my Sears Kenmore frost free upright freezer and what was causing the ice buildup was very simple. At the factory, the assembler looped the little hose too high and when the water went into the hose it could not get out due to being too high in one spot! An ice dam will form, blocking ALL water coming throughand freezing up any more water coming down giving you a HUGE wad of ice that is scary!!! I just removed the screw holding the loop that holds the hose and put a bit of warm water down the little hole on the INSIDE (Behind the grate) to melt the remaining ice in the tube. You need to take out 4 screws and remove the grate to see this. I could not believe that this was the problem! I haven't had any ice build up since. Now don't tear your freezer apart before you try this trying to fix the compressor, thermostat etc. It may be the only thing wrong with it!

Only the top 2 freezer panels seem to be working. they have ice build up on them (it is not a frost-free model) and the other shelves have nothing. This is not usual. and the fruit i had in the bottom of the freezer was partially thawed.

Good day,You have a refrigerant leak. Unless the unit is under warranty(usually 5 years) the repairs would range from extremely expensive to impossible.Recharging doesn't work, since the charge would simply leak back out.Sorry for the bad news, butThank you for using FixYa.

Ice build-up Upright frost free freezer has a build up of ice (not frost) on the bottom.

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. You must change this defroster heater assembly so it will works normal again.. Hope this may help; Regards, VOTIT

Hoover HNU271AFFAL I have this "frost free" freezer & have to manually defrost it every 2 months or so as the fan in it seems to get stuck ( I assume with ice?)After that it works fine for a while. It is only one year old! Are these frost free units known to be very unreliable? I had an old LEC conventional freezer for 22 years before that only needed a defrost every 3 years or so & never let me down! I am seriously thinking of dumping this & buying another conventional unit as I am fed up of losing all my food. Maybe they need another few years to get these working reliably? I think any device with a fan in it would be prone to failures? can you recommend a good one to buy? ( at least 8 cu ft, upright)

As an ex hoover eng. these so called frost free units were never frost free!!!! if the unit was over gased in the factory it will over freeze. some early units were fitted with faulty modules and sensors. which were recalled thru engineer van stock but not to the public. call the service there service dept. but be careful not all hoover/candy/gias engineers are trained in refrigeration ( ask for a senior engineer. the staff turn over is huge!

Ok we have a kenmore upright freezer Model # 253.26062103. We got it brand new about 3-4 years ago. It was working fine til about 2 weeks ago when the ice cream became soft and high temp alarm started going off..everything else stayed frozen. my husband checked and there was frost build up on the back wall which we decided to take evrything out of the freezer and self defrost it because we thought since the outside temp was unusually high maybe the freezer wasnt able to defrost properly. We did this and plugged it back in a few days later. We put a thermometer inside the freezer and it is only reading 20 degrees F or -5 celcius. Still not cold enough. We then replaced the electronic control panel which also houses the defrost timer and that did not help raise the temp. Alarm still going off when switched is turned on. We then decided to have a repair service out...they said it was the defrost heater, timer and thermostat, we said we already replaced the timer, so we bought the other 2 parts and replaced them. well it is still not cooling properly and we have no idea what to check next...This is costing us a ridiculous amount of money and we can't get a solution...Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the sensor, a $15 part. it pretty much controls everything related to defrosting.

Small patch of ice if frost free freezer

Frost free does not mean no frost ever anywhere. It just means that there is a mechanism to defrost the evaporator on a regular basis. If there is a spot where frost is forming in the box it may just mean that a little bit of moisture that is not collected on the coil may be finding another cold spot to stick. The area where the fan blows into the cabinet is bound to be the coldest spot in the freezer therefore an ideal place to collect frost. Check the level of the unit and your door gasket to be sure the door is closing tight and true.
