My wife and I bought a Kenmore chest freezer (14.8 cubic foot) about 6 weeks ago. It is made by Frigidaire for Sears, and the model number is #253.165.42105, serial # WB94341279. It has been working OK. However, I put two high-quality thermometers in the freezer, one deep in the center of the freezer and the other in one of the baskets near the top of the freezer. The temperature setting was on #5 out of a possible 8, where 8 is the coldest. The temperature in the center ranged from -13.2F to +8.1F, a difference of nearly 23F degrees. The basket thermometer ranged from -7F to 18F, a difference of 25F degrees. That seems to be far too great a swing in temperatures ? and it was measured without the door being opened except to read the thermometers. I?m sure this model freezer has a factory specification for the maximum temperature differential allowable before the unit turns back on to lower the temperature. Could you please let me know what it is? Everywhere I read it says that frozen food should be kept below +5F degrees for maximum safety and quality. Even the center of the freezer doesn?t stay below +5F degrees. Please let me know the spec for the maximum temperature differential for this freezer and what I should do about its performance. Thank you.

This is well with in factory specifications. Hot air rises and cold air drops. Because a chest freezer does not have a fan to circulate the air it is normal for the basket to be warmer than the bottom of the freezer. The bottom of the freezer is used for food you want to keep for a longer period of time. What you store in the basket is food you will freeze for a short period of time. Ice cream should not be kept in the basket. As you fill your freezer with food you will find that the temperature will equal out because the frozen food will take up the place of the frozen air which will give you a more stable freezer temperature. Try your test when you have it full of food.

Freezer hope you can help! have a whirlpool freezer, i am not sure of the model number only that it is an upright freezer standing 1800 x 600 x 600. Before christmas temperature started to rise i was told it was due to the extreme cold temperatures so i moved it into the house and this cured the problem however in the last few days during the night the temperature started to rise and also occasionally during the day. By turning the freezer off and on again this cures the problem and the pump switches back on and the freezer temperatures lowers again.

If the unit is a auto defrost sound like a defrosting problem, if not a self defrost and the coils are not covered in thick frost then a sealed system issue would be the problem to check

Temperature swing specification in a chest freezer.

It depends on the control that your freezer utilizes. If your temp control dial has the numbers 0-9 or 1-9, then you have whats commonly known as a coil temp sensor.Unlike an air temp contol that measure the air temp inside the freezer and comes on and off with a 3-5° swing, the coil temp sensor runs a little bit different. With a coil temp control or sensor, the temp control has a capillary tube and bulb that is inserted into the coil either at on of the ends down a guidetube or just into the center of the radiator type fins. This temp control measures the temperature of the coil, and not the temperature of the air inside the freezer. When the unit runs, the coils typically gets 20° colder than the air temp. And when the control satisfies (shuts off), it will not call for cooling again until the sensing bulb has reached the cut-in point which is typically well above design box temp. So, to quickly answer your question, yes it is possible to have a 25° temp swing and not have anything really wrong with the unit. That is how its been designed to operate and that is how it will operate. Your only option (although not recommended) is to replace the coil temp sensor with and air temp control. That will give you more consistent temps. Also, when taking temp of a freezer with a coil temp sensor, be sure to temp the product in the freezer and not the air temperature.

Frigidaire FFU20F9G (model FFU20F9GW3) temperature light is on

Several things could cause this. To check most things you will need to remove the back wall of the freezer to see the evaporator. It is possible the freezer is low on gas. If it is the coils will usually appear to be only half frosted or less. It is possible the defrost is bad ( I assume this is a frost free) In this case the coils will be totally clogged with ice and no air can circulate. If so you'll most likely have to replace the bi-metal... a circular looking part about the diameter of a quarter clipped onto the coil with 2 wires leading from it. This may also cause the fan to stop running from ice accumulation...or the fan itself could be bad which would also cause a partial meltdown. Unless the machine needs gas an appliance repair person will probably charge you around 100 bucks for most of these repairs..gassing it of course will be more and there is no guarantee how long the gas will stay in it as most leaks are difficult, if not impossible to locate. Hope that helps !
