Compressor Stops on Kenmore Chest Freezer

Model 253.8193616 will not start by itself but if I tap it real good beside the temp control knob and call it by it's right name, the compressor starts right up again. I do this twice a day but I want to leave the house for a couple of there a part I can replace? Although the unit is 16 years old, it looks new and is worth saving. Please help.

We purchased an 8.8cu.ft. Kenmore chest freezer model # 970-159320. I plugged it in at 10:00 am today and later transferred food from old freezer. When I go home at 10:00 pm this evening, the compressor was not running and the temperature in the freezer was -10C. So I increased the setting to 5 but nothing happened. By turning up the dial to 5 should the compressor not have started? 15 minutes later when I checked the freezer the compressor was running. At what setting will the freezer cool down to 0 F?

If the freezer was stored and not running for 7 years it may have lost coolant.  Since the compressor is running recharging the coolant may fix the problem.  Hot compressor might indicate low coolant since its motor is immersed in it.

Freezer stopped My freezer is a kenmore model 253.9135311 built in 1994. This winter while heavily frosted it stopped cooling. I had to stuff my food in a snowbank and then in a friend's freezer. The light goes on but the compressor gives no sign of life. I figure it is the conpressor that is gone and nothing can be done but replace it at high cost to Sears repair. Maybe there is another way but I don't know it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the compressor is staying cold and there is not a clicking noise from it occasionally it could just be a faulty thermostat ot compressor relay, neither item should be expensive.

I have a kenmore upright freezer and can't remember which setting it should be on. It has coldest 1 2 3 etc.

I keep min two notches from the coldest setting.A great way to check where you should set yous,is ice cream.Put an open container of ice cream in the freezer, and turn the freezer to coldest. The next day try to scoop the ice cream. If the ice cream is hard the freezer is too cold.Adjust the freezer two notches ,and try the ice cream the next day.Repeat till you are happy with the hardness of the ice cream. It should be easy to scoop but not too soft.
