Freezer and fridge stop working when home temp is cold

We're wondering if there is a freezer, which will work even when home temp is cold. We store quite a bit of produce for the winter, but have lost entire harvests due to cold home temperatures while we're away for the holidays. We don't really have a way to keep the house warm at those times, and I'm guessing it can get down to 15 or 20 F. Additionally, we plan on switching to solar, so we're looking for low-energy models.

Freezer and fridge stop working when home temp is cold

Ketner1 what you are looking for is an old style freezer. They ran so hot that they didn't care what the temps in the garage was. Here is a suggestion. I am not sure what kind of freezer you have had, but look for one that doesn't have a coil on the back of it. Freezers with the condenser in the cabinet work well at the temps you are looking for, however they don't work well in garages at 90 degrees, then they just transfere the heat to the inside of the freezer. This is the style my parents use and theirs is in a storage shed with no heat.

A year ago I was given a very large White Westinghouse Fridge-Freezer of unknown age. I can't see the model number as some of the information on the back has been damaged. It's an American-style product, with two tall compartments side by side rather than on top of one another. The freezer section has an ice maker and cold water dispenser... anyway the machine worked well for months, but now although the machine appears to be still running - lights, compressor etc, it's stopped getting really cold. The freezer side is just above freezing (Ice doesn't stay ice but it feels cold) and the fridge side is only just below ambient temp. The only thing I can see wrong is that at the back is a narrow plastic tube coming out of a joint near the top of the fridge: this had become detached, and it seems empty. I have put it back, but it's still empty. I am afraid the product may not be repairable but I need to be sure. What should I do?

Have you tried cleaning the condensor coils.

Freezer stopped freezing

If you checked the fan and for ice on the back wall (for defrost problem) Then you most likely are low on freon or you have a bad compressor. Check to see if the compressor is running (IF scorching hot its bad too) . Next check to see if the coils under the unit are hot. They should be so hot you cant hold onto them. Just touch for a second. If they are just warm, then you are low in freon.

Hi, i have a Hoover HCA 36 FT ALU fridge freezer, a few weeks back it started making a wheird high pitched gurgling noise, a yesterday it stopped working. If i switch it off at the mains and then back on it will start up then stop straight away, it does try to run but almost instantly stops again. The light inside is working, however sometimes flashes slowly on and off? Also, if i leave it off at the mains for about an hour, with both doors open, then switch it on at the mains it will do a normal cycle, cool the fridge, freeze the freezer section but when it is supposed to kick in when temp raises it wont restart? .

Sounds like a capillary issue. The capillary tube is the metering device for the refrigerant.... a long tube with the bore measured in thousandths of an inch. If it has become restricted, it could well be overloading the compressor on start-up if the pressures on the high and low sides of the system do not equalize. In my experience, this is quite common on systems utilizing R*134A, especially if the compressor has overheated previously. You may well need the services of a refrigeration technician.

Fridge freezer side by side running constantly but not cooling.

Make it a habit to defrost it every week. You see, when ice forms around the evaporator tubes (which runs around the walls of fridge and freezer), heat exchange reduces (that means heat is no longer absorbed from the things inside the refrigerator) and cooling stops. See whether freezer walls or fridge walls are damaged. Do not use knives or any other sharp tools to remove ice. Do not forcefully remove items that are difficult to take out from the freezer. Defrost and remove them.
