A year ago I was given a very large White Westinghouse Fridge-Freezer of unknown age. I can't see the model number as some of the information on the back has been damaged. It's an American-style product, with two tall compartments side by side rather than on top of one another. The freezer section has an ice maker and cold water dispenser... anyway the machine worked well for months, but now although the machine appears to be still running - lights, compressor etc, it's stopped getting really cold. The freezer side is just above freezing (Ice doesn't stay ice but it feels cold) and the fridge side is only just below ambient temp. The only thing I can see wrong is that at the back is a narrow plastic tube coming out of a joint near the top of the fridge: this had become detached, and it seems empty. I have put it back, but it's still empty. I am afraid the product may not be repairable but I need to be sure. What should I do?

Have you tried cleaning the condensor coils.

We have a Bosch upright freezer GSN32A20GB. Recently we got the AL code and whislt the fgreezer seems cold I am not sure it is working properly. The compressor is very warm to the touch but I wouldn't say very hot - I removed the plastic retaining pins from the colling unit at the top of the freezer and it had some frost in the cooling fins - I removed these but the symptoms are exactly the same. I power off, leave ot a few minutes and it comes back with the SU light flashing - if I press the SU button I get the AL back and flashing red although I can turn the SU on. SHould there be a flow of cold air from the top of the freezer assisted by a fan? If so it may be that the fan has stopped working? Other than that everything seems cold but it appears that it has reached a temeperature of -9 and maybe not got down to the desired -22? It has worked fine for a number of years until yesterday Thanks

HelloIn your case you will have to narrow the fault down to either the control board or the compressor, you'll need the multimeter. You need to hook the multimeter to the compressor wiring and see if it's being powered. If it is, the compressor is the cause of the problem. If it's not, the control board is the likely cause. If it's a faulty compressor however, you'll probably find the cost of repair is prohibitive.A compressor and regas will cost £200 upward. It's not a diy job and will require a refrigeration engineer. If the compressor is faulty too, then fitting a new board may result in another faulty board.Unplug the appliance.Take the facia off and gain access to the control board.See if it's obviously damaged. If it is, then it's likely there is an underlying fault that has caused it to "blow".If not, it's possible a component on the board has just failed.
