AS A FRIDGE ENGINEER I HAVE COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM BEFORE IT COULD BE A LOSS OF REFRIGERANT ALTHOUGH THIS WOULD STEADILY WORSEN IN USE,MORE LIKELY THERE IS A BLOCKAGE IN THE SYSTEM STOPPING THE REFRIGERANT REACHING ALL THE PIPEWORK THE CHEAPER FREEZERS USE THE SHELFS AS PART OF THE FREEZING SYSTEM. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS A COMPRESSOR CHANGE AND REGAS (COSTLY IF NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY/GUARANTEE ETC) IF FREEZER IS MORE THAN 5 YRS OLD BEST TO SCRAP IT UNFORTUNATELY..

I have a phillips upright fridge freezer. It has a top compartment area and then 3 drawers. Food seems to be frozen properly in the bottom 2 drawers but in the top compartment which I mainly use to freeze bread, the bread isn't freezing properly. The ice cream in the next drawer down also seems to be very soft. Can you help please? and do you think the food is still safe to eat? (It is 25 years old but has worked perfectly up until now) Thank you.

Bread and ice cream are the 1st things to defrost and it sounds like a gas problem and at 25 years old time for a new i think.

Freezer seems to be partitioned. The bottom part will freeze water but the top portion will not! Seems to work well after it has been unplugged for awhile and allowed to defrost. But , the vent for both top and bottom do not appear to be bocked by the formation of ice. The vaccum seal works initially after being shutdown, but the it does not work and thus the freezer doesn't freeze!

It sounds like you have a failure of the automatic defrost system. This system has 3 components - timer, this device provides power to the compressor for cooling then changes to the defrost mode every 8 - 10 hours and provides power for the heater- heater, this is located just below the evaporator and clears the frost from the coils- terminator, this device turns the defrost cycle off and prevents over heating during the defrost cycle. To test the components locate the timer, it is usually on the back or in front behind the kick panel; it looks like thisThe white piece can be turned either by hand or a flat blade screwdriver, turn it clockwise slowly until a positive 'click' is heard. Once you hear this stop and wait, you will be in the defrost cycle, if you open the door after about 5 minutes you should hear the water sizzling on the heater faintly behind the back panel inside the freezer. If you do hear that then the heater and terminator are okay and you need to replace the timer. If you do not get heat you will need to unload the freezer, and remove the back panel. Behind there is the evaporator and below that is the heater. You will have to test the heater with an ohm meter it should read under 100 ohms. The terminator is clipped to the top of the evaporator and should read 0 ohms when it is cold.I

My refridgerator forms alot of moisture on the top shelf

Ok sounds to me like you have one of two problems here on the information you gave, the first thing you should do is check the gaskets around freezer and fridge door...use a sheet of paper, shut the door in cirtain places...if the if the paper slides out without tension air from the out side could be getting in and conndensing into water on the roof and dripping down...if this is the case replace the gasket. Second possiblity and more likley is your drain plug is blocked, this is a tube that leads from below the evaporator to a pan next to the compressor. when the defrost system kicks in the melted ice has nowhere to go because the drain tube is blocked...so it finds its way down the vent into the fridge. Easy way to check is unplug the appliance...take panel out from back of freezer..normally a few screws..once removed check the evaporator and pan below it..is there ice in the pan below and on the evaporator? yes? you have a blockage. easy way to fix is to melt ice with hair dryer...once you see the drain hole in bottom of pan below evaporator..dry up access water the pour hot water into pan...wait a few minutes...dry water up in pan again...repeat this step 2-3 times then stick electrical wire or curtain wire down the hole..when you reach the blockage and clear it you will see water suddenly drain down hole...drain is now unblocked..replace panel plug appliance back in. I hope this helps...please dont hesitate to contact back if you have any further information or question. Good luck!

We have a 20.3 cubic feet Kenmore upright frost free freezer we purchased in May 2003. We noticed the meat was beginning to thaw one afternoon. We hit the quick freeze button and that seemed to fix the problem for awhile. Just opened the freezer and the temperature was close to 32. I listened all day for the motor to kick on but no luck. I turned the dial in the freezer, no motor or fan would come on. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, the motor ran for a very short time. The only way It works is when you push the quick freeze button. What is going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This sounds like a bad thermostadt, since the quick freeze button does work. But it should be much colder than 32 degrees. It may also be the motor, since it runs for brief periods of time after plugging it back in. I'd say best bet here is to call a repairman. (sorry...)
