I have a Coldspot Chest Freezer that needs to be cut in two either length wise or halved to get it out of the basement and outside. The model number is C933 1318400 and the serial number is 1C33935. The refrigerant is indicated as R12 but is followed by a 17 in a box. Is it safe to cut with this type of refrigerant? Were these lined with asbestos or fiberglass? Would it be better to halve the freezer vertically or horizontally?
Welcome to FixYa,
Regardless of the type of refrigerant in the unit it is illegal ( and dangerous ) to open the system without proper recovering the gas in the system, hence the reason most landfill sites charge to dispose of household refrigerator/freezers etc.
I would not suggest cutting it until you can arrange to have a local appliance company come in and recovery the R12 ( even if it was R134a or R22, cfc or non-cfc...same rules apply ) properly or find an alternative.
You may also want to check with your local provincial or state laws, the environmental agency may provide a service or be able to recommend an alternative to you which will be legal and safe.
Hope this sheds some light onto the question presented.
Thank you for choosing FixYa and good luck going forward. Be safe.
